Automatic log digitization

Catalogue of Mineral Localities of South Carolina

A digitized version of Bulletin No. 2 by Earle Sloan (1908), "Catalogue of Mineral Localities of South Carolina", presented in the form of an ArcGIS Instant App.
Using a combination of OCR and manual transcription, myself and an intern under my supervision combed through the 509-page publication and converted its contents and observations to a tabular format. After georeferencing the map, we digitized and labeled 300+ mineral localities in a file geodatabase.
Next, I designed a template with Adobe Acrobat and wrote a Python script that iterated through the spreadsheet to programmatically generate individual PDFs for each locality. Each PDF was then attached to its corresponding point and made publicly available in ArcGIS Online.
This project made the spatial dimension of the dataset much more accessible, which greatly increases the discoverability and usefulness of the publication to historians of geology. Code available upon request.
